Midwife: Maria Nakambunda-Anton

A midwife is a professional that specialises in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, women's sexual and reproductive health, family planning and new-born care.
A midwife is a registered nurse in midwifery, caring for women during childbirth. Maria Nakambunda-Anton has worked as a midwife for the past 7 years. Nakambunda-Anton never thought she will go into nursing especially as a midwife. “When I fell pregnant at the age of 20, I visited a local clinic to be assisted and the service I got made me pursue the course. I never liked seeing blood but the visit to the clinic inspired me to help give my fellow Namibians better healthcare,” she says.
“The highlight of this job is the relationship you build with the mother and child even after birth. Every time a healthy baby is delivered I feel like it is a miracle,” she says.
“As a young person that’s about to make a decision whether to pursue midwifery, you should make sure you are ready to take on what the job requires,” she says.
