On 2 November the Road Fund Administration (RFA) handed over the Buitepos kindergarten and early childhood development centre at the Trans-Kalahari border post in the Omaheke Region.

The kindergarten received land from the Omaheke regional council and therefore sought assistance from the corporate community to construct a permanent structure.

The construction of the facility cost a total of N$1.2 million.

It consists of classrooms, a playground and secure fencing. The centre is set to cater for children from the community, including those of RFA employees and the various government agencies operating at the border post.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony RFA CEO Ali Ipinge said they recognised the need for the centre, which will also cater for the surrounding areas.

“In demonstration of our commitment to social economic advancement, the RFA, during the inauguration of our staff houses in June 2017, pledged funding towards the construction of the Buitepos kindergarten, after learning that the kindergarten was operating from an informal structure,” he said.

Omaheke governor Festus Ueitele governor said the emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development and on the adults they will become.

“Kindergartens and early childhood development centres across the world support a generation of children and enable them to learn, grow, flourish and be prepared for the exciting challenges that lie ahead of them,” he said.

Ueitele added there is significance in education and through school education children learn and develop their personalities, mental skills and moral and physical powers.

He said good facilities and good infrastructure are important for producing good schooling outcomes.

“I have no doubt that better facilities, such as new schools and new ablution facilities, encourage better school attendance. And better school attendance is obviously good for early childhood development,” he said.

Ueitele expressed his appreciation to the regional council for allocating land for the kindergarten and to the RFA for its financial assistance.
