Namibia celebrated 29 years of independence and this year Duinesig decided to host the annual pre-independence concert on Tuesday. It was a holistic and humble way of bringing forth togetherness among the youth.

What is Independence Day? To some people it’s the countries birthday, the day of freedom, but others feel that independence is the moment where a country can finally enjoy its own fruits without being controlled by other countries says Helena a learner I spoke to.
It was a pure and encouraging way of embracing our independence by culture, music and singing. The performing schools were mainly the De Duine and Duinesig school choirs. Their voices, harmonizing perfectly caught the audience’s attention to the extent of some teachers wanted to join in on the singing.
The program kicked off with a prayer, by Brown, then the national anthem followed by the choir singing the African Union Anthem. There was story telling about our old Namibia back then and what happened in the year 1990. The Duinesig choir performed in the second round with the crowds’ favorite song and made them unite together in singing. There was a poem reading told by Thabisa Ntebe and written by Helalia.Y.Petrus, titled Living in one Namibia which reads as followed
“We are only as strong as we are united
As near as we are divided
Every part of Namibia has a different landscape that defines nature
We need to embrace our differences across borders and stand tall as one”
