Every year, a number of talented learners audition for Gimmies Got Talent, but only a few goes through to the final. This year an astounding eithty-three groups auditioned, but only the best twenty-seven acts went through. On Thursday, 18 July, the Gimmies Got Talent Gala evening took place. Nine finalists were chosen out of the twenty-seven performances. Those nine finalists are as follows:

- the Junior Primary finalists were the skillful Maria Amadhila, Elizabeth von Wieligh and Priye Hakeeend;

- the Senior Primary finalists were the gifted Nicola du Plessis, the High Notes and Junior Katoma; and lastly

- the Secondary School finalists were the accomplished Marco Kooitjie, Janke du Plessis and Gabby Coffee.

Even though all these contestants have wonderful talents, there could only be three winners. These talented winners are none other than Elizabeth von Wieligh, the High Notes and Janke du Plessis. It is obvious that all the students are gifted with magnificent talents.

You might be wondering what these contestants did to achieve the marvelous first place. Elizabeth von Wieligh performed two wonderful monologues. The High Notes is a choir that sang a beautiful Afrikaans and English song and Janke du Plessis performed two spectacular dances.

Like every year, there were three dazzling guest performers. They are usually the winners from the previous year. This year they were Jaime Oosthuizen, Jean-Jacques Coffee and a finalist in last year’s talent show, Jodie-Lee Barnard. Jaime Oosthuizen performed a modern contemporary dance. Jean-Jacques Coffee performed a monologue. Lastly, Jodie-Lee Barnard performed a dance as well.

This year’s theme was “under the sea” and Mrs Snymann, Mrs van Zyl and Mrs du Plessis arranged the décor accordingly. Their efforts yielded a beautifully transformed hall and the great detail made the night memorable for both those who came to support friends and family and those who participated.

Another group of people who helped make Gimmies Got Talent a magical night was the school’s team of sound and lighting technicians. They were responsible for all the beautiful lights that were seen during the acts and for the music used by the performers.

There is obviously an organizer who made the whole night possible, and that person is Ms Cora Bruwer. She organized practice sessions for the afternoons to help prepare the contestants for the Gala evening. Thanks to her, all the students of Windhoek Gymnasium could showcase their talents.

With the hard work from the contestants and the hours spent to make the night outstanding, it truly was a magical night. The show proves that not all stars belong to the sky.
