Every Child is a Unique Learner

JUSTISIA SHIPENA
Every child is different and has their own unique pattern of how they learn about the world around them. Good classroom teaching should use a variety of teaching methods to reflect the different preferred learning styles of the children in the class, and to enable every child to be able to engage in learning.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on many aspects in education. One positive that stands out is that parents are becoming more aware of their children’s real progress in school due to them playing a more active role as the parent-teacher at home during the lockdown.

Most school systems find it difficult to balance the individual need of the child and the curriculum demands. It becomes a rush to cover what is set out in the curriculum at the cost of the optimal development of children.

When a child has special educational needs or a disability, learning can be much harder and it doesn’t always happen as easily as it does for other children. Different styles of teaching, resources, additional equipment, or adaptations to the classroom may have to be made to enable children with additional needs in order for them to reach their full potential.

At Rosewood Academy we believe early intervention is key. We currently endeavour to provide each child in our Early Learning Centre (4 - 6 years old) and Grade 1 & 2 groups with a differentiated programme. We aim to meet them at the level they enter the school/class with. We accelerate their learning as building blocks fall in place ensuring a solid foundation. Experiencing success is key and learning becomes fun.

It is a very exciting time to be working within special education needs and learning support in education, being on the brink of fresh thinking and innovative approaches, and sharing the responsibility of enabling this generation of children with learning challenges to have high expectations for themselves and their ability to live enriched, inclusive lives throughout their adulthood.

An exciting project that is in the pipeline at Rosewood Academy is in the final stages of establishing a dedicated Integrated Learning Support (ILS) Unit for learners with special education needs which will be fully operational from January 2021 onwards.
