World Environment celebrated under the theme air pollution

World Environment day is an annual event hosted on the 5 June with different themes every year along with a solution to the theme. The theme for 2019 was air pollution. Picking up papers is not always the only thing one could do for the environment, other problems could be tackled as well.

The environment can be described as your surroundings in the most simplistic terms. It is also the closest we could reconnect to Mother Nature. For this reason, it should be celebrated as it is what keeps us alive and going strong. Gratitude can be shown to the environment by maintaining it and by bettering its image.

The Learners Representative Council (LRC) of SSS were well aware of this day as they made preparations for it from the very start of the year by going green! This not only means starting a garden to better the school’s image but, the positive effects brought about it as well. Indeed, a good vegetable or two will be the end result, but that’s not all.

Greenery brings about a lot of benefits for the environment, for instance increasing the circulation of oxygen in the environment. The green environment made possible by the LRCs of Swakopmund Secondary School (SSS) brings about fresh air ready for inhalation and sufficient oxygen which helps the brain focus well when concentration takes place.

“The initiative of the LRCs really had a positive impact on my health as the air in the square (a roofless section of the school building) is always fresh,” said Imelda Muheua, a matriculate at the school.

The grade 8 as well as the LRCs came together to show appreciation to the environment by cleaning it up. This was no ordinary clean up as all the learners took cleaning up to an extended level by giving special care and attention to the plants and trees in and around the school grounds.

Lastly, one should show gratitude to the environment because it is all we as a community can proudly say IT’S OURS. We should all hold hands together, breathe lekker and go green together!
