Geskiedenis, gode en geskenke: Kultuurtoer in Griekeland

Vanaf 20 tot 30 Augustus het 8 Windhoek Afrikaans Privaatskool leerlinge, vergesel deur die skoolhoof Meneer Des van Heerden met groot opwinding Griekeland besoek. Dit is wel bekend dat die Grieke tragedie ontwerp het, maar die toer het sonder enige tragedies verloop en die leerlinge het beslis verryk teruggekeer na ons eie sonskyn land. Die hele avontuur het begin met ʼn opwindende 15 ure lank vlug na die stad van Athene, uitsluitend die om-en-by 7 ure wat hulle by Doha, Qatar moes wag.
Toe hulle uiteindelik by Athene, die Griekse hoofstad, arriveer het hulle die Panathenaic Stadium van Kallimarmaro besoek. Die naam vertaal direk na pragtige marmer en is die enigste stadion wat heeltemal uit marmer gebou is. Daarna het hulle die asemrowende Akropolis van Athene besoek. Die Akropolis bevat die oorblyfsels van ’n groot hoeveelheid antieke geboue, die bekendste van hulle is die Parthenon.
Na die antieke Athene het hulle die eiland van Mykonos besoek, The Island of The Winds. ’n Eiland met minder as 12 000 mense en een van die grootste rolspelers in die Griekse toerisme bedryf. Hulle het vir twee nagte op Mykonos gebly en Pieter Du Preez, ʼn Graad 11 leerling en die enigste seun wat saam gegaan het op die toer, beskryf dit as volg: “Mykonos was vir my die mooiste eiland. Dit het Griekeland in die beste moontlike manier uitgebeeld en opgesom.” Na die beeldskoonheid van Mykonos is hulle met ’n snelboot na die eiland van Santorini, waar die grootste vulkaniese uitbarsting ooit, so omtrent 3600 jaar terug, gebeur het. Op Santorini het hulle die Akrotiri uitgrawings besoek en bewonder.
Daarna is hulle weer met ’n snelboot na die eiland van Kreta en daar het hulle die stad Heraklion, vernoem na die bekende Griekse held, Heracles, besoek. Hulle het die ryk geskiedenis van die Arkadi klooster besoek. Dié klooster was as skuiling gebruik vir vrouens en kinders gedurende die 19de eeu en ook tydens die Kretenser Weerstand.
Na twee vinnige uitstappies na die stad van Chania en ook na die beroemde oorblyfsels van die oudste stad - tot dusver ontdek - Knossos, het hulle die Heraklion Argelogiese Museum besoek. Dit is nie net die grootste museum in Griekeland nie, maar die beste museum in die wêreld vir Minoër kunswerke.
Die toer het tot ʼn einde gekom en 15 ure later het hulle uiteindelik terug in Namibië geland met koppe vol kennis en sakke vol geskenke!
