Getting lost in a world of performing arts

The Namibian Association of Talent, Modelling and Entertainment hosted the 16th Namibian Championships of Performing Arts at the national theatre of Namibia from 16 to 18 May.

The aim of the championship is to scout talent in Namibia and to unite young people through music and performing arts. It also serves as a qualifier round for contestants to represent Namibia at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOP) in Los Angeles, United States of America in July.

Contestants took part in dancing, singing, acting, playing instruments, rhythmical gymnastics, and revue groups and modelling. The championship included two age categories which are the junior section with ages ranging from 5 to 15 years and the senior section included ages from 16 to 30 years.

Speaking at the event, Daleen kitt,Director of Namibia Championships of Performing Arts, said that there are so many talented people in Namibia and that the events serves as a platform for the youth to express themselves.

“We have a lot of talent in Namibia and we need more platforms for performing arts to show everybody that we have a lot of talent and take it internationally as well,” she said. Speaking to The Zone on Friday, Schwane Blignaut, one of the contestants said she is very pleased that she took part in the championships. According to her performing arts is underrated in Namibia. She further said that the championship could open up opportunities in the near future for her as a contemporary dancer.

Blignaut urged the youth to enter such competition and she believes that it is not about winning but it is about the friendships created backstage.

“I was introduced to the Namibia Championships of Performing arts six years ago and ever since it has changed my life,” she said.
