As all know school has started and by the look at last year’s performance, it was not so good. This made the principal of Jan Jonker Afrikaner H.S come up with afternoon studies due to poor performance at the school.

The afternoon studies started on the 3rd of February this year. This initiative taken is to help learners to do their school work and to create study groups among learners. According to the acting HOD MR.

Flanan Sikopo says that the reason why they have decided to conduct these afternoon studies is to simply just improve the academic performances. The environment where most of the learners live is not conducive enough to study. Learners have a lot of responsibilities at home which makes it very challenging to do homework or study.

For instance they have to do house choirs and take care of their younger siblings. Learners are encouraged to study very hard and that they should be committed towards their school work. They should learn to do their assignments on time and refrain from unnecessary things that are not part of school

This study session enables learners to help each other where they find it difficult to work out. Teachers make provision to help learners during study sessions, this is to provide knowledge that they require. Learners should be inspired and motivated so they know what is needed to achieve in life.

Parents/guardians should be involved in learner’s education. Learners should convince their parents about the importance of school. Most parents don’t go through their children’s books or ask how they are performing at school and this makes learners to poorly perform academically.

This afternoon studies are they to prepare learners for tasks and examinations, this can help them to improve their academic results. According to grade 11 and 12 learners, they feel that these studies are there for to spend more time doing their work. They say that during these classes, they study and do their homework because it’s a serious year and that they have to work hard in order to be admitted in university.

“These study classes help us to prepare for examinations because many learners get nervous during exam time,” says Natasha !Ames, a grade 11 LRC. We believe that these studies sessions will change the academic performance of Jan Jonker Afrikaner learners to a better level.
