“Go the extra mile, it’s never crowded’’. Swakopmund Secondary School hosted its yearly interhouse athletics day on the 4th of February 2020. The gates opened at 8h00 and the day kicked off extremely well, as all learners showed up looking all sporty, in their team colours and extremely optimistic for the day ahead, since the school never fails to entertain.

The event started off with the most anticipated part of the athletics day: the 2000 m run for the matriculates. Which made all pupils scream for the matriculates who have a school journey that is now fast approaching its end. The day continued in due course as there were soft drinks and food sold by the tuck shop and environmental club members on the sports ground and music played in the background which contributed to the spirit.

Meanwhile the cheerleading squad was ready to put on their dancing shoes and to keep the spirits high for the athletes and for the spectators. Their dance moves kept the teachers and learners on their feet as they screamed and sang along with the mix. At the end of their performance they got a standing ovation from the entire school. “Dancing in front of the whole school was quite out of my comfort zone, but I enjoyed it” said Uamu a participant of the cheerleading squad.

After the cheerleaders left the field, it was time for the athletes to take center stage to put their athletic abilities to the test and give it their best. A good number of learners took part in sports activities which included long jump, Shotput, Javelin toss, Discus toss, and Relay. Most of the athletes made it to the zonals. “It wasn’t easy coming out first, but it was worth it” said one of the athletes.

The teachers closed off the event with a 100 meters run fewer teachers took part in but in the end we got the first runner up was Mr. Immanuel, second runner up was Mr. Hamukuaya. As the day came to an end the learners packed up and were ready to hit the road that leads them home. “It was indeed one of the best sports day, but I will miss surely miss S.S.S,” said Emilya . And as for the school they are looking forward to what the school will bring next year.

The Sharkies held the trophy up high and took it home with pride. Most of the learners qualified to the zonals that took place on the 3rd of February at the Vineta sports stadium. Most of the schools were present namely Duneside High School, Pro-Ed Akademie, Festus Gonteb Primary School, Vrede Rede Primary School and Arandis Primary school. The honorable chairperson of S.S.S Bradley Dauseb raised the S.S.S learners spirits high with motivational speeches and encouragements.
