WAP het vanjaar drie spanne ingeskryf vir die Niktus Napso Kultuurfees se Brugboukompetisie in Swakopmund, waarvan een span 'n algehele tweede plek behaal het.

Die drie spanne, wat elk uit drie lede bestaan het, was onder leiding van me. Gisela Henn. Boonop is al die lede ook in die fisiese wetenskap, al was inskrywings oop vir almal. Die drie spanne het Vrydag, 6 September, na skool agter gebly vir 'n toetslopie van hul verskeie ontwerpe. Hulle het geoefen met die reëls en regulasies van die Suid-Afrikaanse Brugboukompetisie siende dat die reëls van die Napso-kompetisie nie vooraf bekend gemaak is nie. Dit is daarom dat die kinders met dowels moes oefen. Boonop was hulle onder die indruk dat hulle drie of meer ure gaan kry om aan die brug te werk.

Groot was hul verbasing toe hulle om 08:00 Vrydag, 13 September, ingelig word hulle moet met roomys stokkies bou en die brûe moet 53 sentimeter lank wees. Bowendien het hulle net twee ure gekry om die brug te bou. Maar dit het nie die spanne, wat hul eie name van E?=½MV², Dit werk nie en Superglue, gestuit nie.

Die E?=½MV²-span het hul eie ontwerp gevolg, wat bestaan het uit 'n geïmproviseerde boog en baie driehoeke. Die bopunt was selfs nouer as die “ryvlak” om die vooraansig ook driehoekig te maak. Dit is alles met die doel om die gewig so goed as moontlik te dra en te versprei. Maar tog help dit niks as daar te min gom gebruik word nie. Al die brûe is bo-oor 'n spasie tussen twee tafels geplaas en dan is daar 'n emmer daaraan vas gemaak en is sand daarin gegooi. Sodra die brug breek word die totale gewig, wat die emmer en alles wat gebruik is om dit aan die brug te hang insluit, op 'n skaal geweeg. En met 'n gewig van 24.6kg het die emmer die bodem van E?=½MV² se brug uitgetrek.

Superglue het ook hul eie ontwerp gevolg, maar die ontwerp was nie bereken om gewig te versprei nie, maar eerder soos hulle gevoel het. Met 'n asemrowende 66.7kg daaraan, het die brug in mekaar gesak. Alhoewel hul brug die tweede grootste gewig kon dra, was hulle nie tweede beste nie. Die beoordelaars neem die gewig wat die brug kan dra en deel dit deur die brug se gewig. Hulle vat die antwoord as 'n punt. Dan gee hulle 'n punt vir estetiese waarde, asook 'n punt vir 'n kort beskrywing van die brug. Die posisie word dan bepaal deur die grootste finale punt.

Dit is daarom dat Dit werk nie, wat bestaan het uit Mianey Botha, Kaylan Eksteen en Ruben du Preez, die tweede plek gekry het. Met 'n skaalmodel brug van enige van die Warren-Truss ontwerpe, is hulle met 'n volle 63.6kg in die tweede plek ingedra.
