FirstRand Namibia handed over a cheque of N$250 000 to Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO) on Friday.

Speaking at the occasion, FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust's corporate social investment manager Revonia Kahivere said the donation would help the hopes and aspirations that young people have for their futures.

“Mondesa Youth Opportunities trust is a fantastic example of how a committed organisation can help to define a fantastic future for this town and country as part of the immense value of great local and corporate involvement, providing youngsters with an education that truly works.

“The FirstRand Namibia Foundation Trust has been involved in supporting education for many years and we know that a lot has changed in this sector, but one core principle remains - every child and every young person deserves the benefit of a quality education.

“This is why the First Rand Namibia Foundation invested N$250 000 in the Mondesa Youth Opportunities trust to continue their work of supplementing overcrowded and underfunded government schools, by delivering a holistic after-school programme to exceptional students, that educates the whole child,” Kahivere said.

She further said that a quality and holistic approach to education is needed as new technologies are shaping the economies of the future, and this will transform the world of work and demand new knowledge and skills in the decades ahead.

“If we are to seize those opportunities, if we are to make Namibia a great engine room of this technology revolution in the 21st century, we need to make the most of all our young talents.

“The young people studying now will be starting their careers in the new economy of the 2020s and 2030s, and I want to thank Mondesa Youth Opportunities for working towards giving them the skills they need to succeed, and giving them an education which is more flexible and more diverse.

“An education that enriches their lives with knowledge, gives each of them a great start in life, and is there for them when they need it,” Kahivere said.

She went on to say that education needs to be the key to unlock the door of the future for young people, as it is the greatest equaliser.

According to her, this would enable Namibia to become a thriving economy that drives up living standards and creates greater security and opportunity for everyone, and where the prosperity that economic growth generates is more fairly shared in society.

“Through education, we can become a country where everyone, from every background, gains the skills they need to get a good job and live a happy and fulfilled life. To achieve that, the FirstRand Namibia Foundation is committed to assist the Government of Namibia to establish an education system at all levels which serves the needs of every child.”
