Oletu Kafula

Advocated and represented by a grade 10 learner Ernesto de Jesus, known as the destructive atomic first speaker, Oletu Fortune Kafula (the verbal cerebral assassin), Setson Neumbo (the future politician), both grade 12 second speakers and the 3rd speaker, Reinhardt Kamatoto, grade 12, (the greatest tsunami) made it all the way to the debating nationals!

These students not only represented the school but also the region at the National Radio debating competition organised by Mr. Fannes Namunya and hosted by renowned radio presenter Shanie, at the 100 Energy FM Radio Station in Windhoek.

Out of 24 participating schools country wide, NHS was able to scoop the 4th place at the finals missing the 3rd place by only two speaker points. Windhoek Gymnasium took the third place, Concordia High School second and first place was awarded to JG van der Walth Secondary School.

The team also managed to secure the title of being the only school from the coast to make it to the semi-finals. Kamatoto was also awarded the Best Male speaker’s trophy along with prize money and a voucher.

Coming this far, these four learners not only plan in taking their public speaking skills to greater heights but also want to keep the debating tradition alive at school. They now offer debating lessons to interested debaters on a weekly basis. The club lives by these words: “Words create sentences but only powerful sentences can make up a true debater."
