Arnold Andries aged 17 is a proud athlete of West Side High. Arnold is a 100, 200m and occasionally does long distances as well.
Arnold participated this year in the Coca Cola Regional athletics Championships and progressed to Nationals, returning with 2 bronze medals and silver.
We had a quick chat and here is what he had to say:
Prescious: What is your biggest a accomplishment thus far?
Arnold: It would be when I was presented the opportunity to represent Namibia at the COSSASA games last year.
Precious: What would be your ultimate achievement?
Arnold: Qualifying for the IAPF Diamond league and further proceeding to the Olympics.
Precious: Do you have difficulty balancing school and sport?
Arnold: Not difficult at all because I prioritise and manage my time wisely
Precious: What is your biggest challenge and how do you manage this challenge?
Arnold: It’s coping without a coach or a personal trainer because a coach knows what best for you and pushes you beyond your limit. Despite that I get through that with my track team who are my motivators.
Precious: What would you say do you need to improve on?
Arnold: My speed on the track as well as my technique but I am working on it with my track team.
Precious: Any serious injuries and how did you deal with it? Did it affect your performance?
Arnold: Yes. A groin injury. It did affect my performance as it was difficult to exercise and it made me doubt myself but I’m full recovered now
Arnold says mother Ursula Prithipaul is his number one supporter and his biggest motivator. He states he is grateful for her support and always pushes him beyond his boundaries through success and failures.
Despite the successes he was faced with disappointments such as not achieving his time record he set out for himself this year. He says it’s been a rough season training without a coach and the competition is increasing.
“The competition is tough but I use this as motivation to do better."
