Should homosexuals be allowed to adopt children in Namibia?

Tunohole Mungoba
Birte Brockerhoff

The Oryx editorial team asked a few teachers and learners what their views are legally allowing homosexual couples to adopt children as their own. This is what they had to say:

Andreas Kamati, grade 12

Yes, because this can allow homosexuals to start their own families and gain the ability to feel the love of parenthood. This may give society a new perspective on their sexuality.

Metumu Tjimune, grade 12

Yes, they should. Homosexuals should have the right to raise children, as this will be beneficial to the whole Namibia as there are children in need of homes.

Willeuterio Coetzee, grade 11

I feel homosexuals should be allowed to adopt in Namibia. In America they allow it, so why not also allow it in Namibia? Homosexual couples are no different from heterogeneous couples. They can also provide a loving and caring home to children.

Ricky Unaeb, grade 9

No, because I think it will encourage homosexuality and inspire the child to become homosexual. Growing up in such an environment may teach the child that homosexuality is the norm, which we all know is not the case. Think of the future of mankind.

Ms Fischer (Afrikaans teacher)

Yes, I do feel that homosexual people should be able to adopt. As I believe God accepts each and everyone just the way they are. They would at least have a suitable home and have loving parents.

Shakira Brockerhoff, grade 9

Yes, I do feel that homosexuals should be able to adopt. As they too can offer a secure and loving home like straight people. Everyone deserves to feel the joy of raising a child even if it’s not their own. It would also show the world that even homosexual people can raise children to be better people and that they can give a loving and caring home for children.

Scharmoné Jackson, grade 10

Yes, every couple needs the love of a child even if they haven’t brought them into this world. Just as every couple needs the love of a child to complete their family.

Britney Diergaardt, grade 10

Yes, because it would help children to find better homes even if their parents will be homosexual. As every child deserves to have a loving and caring family.

DeAundre Useb, grade 12

No, because I feel that it will encourage homosexuality in our country. When children grow up in a home where their parents have the same gender, they will be nurtured to also be in a homosexual relationship. Also because the Namibian society already rejects and shuns homosexuals.

Mr Hoasemab, teacher

No, because I am a firm believer of Christianity and it would not be right for orphaned children to grow up in such an environment as it is against what the Bible states.
