Sottekamp: straf of seëning?

Afhangende van wie nou hierdie titel gelees het, is die kanse groot dat jou opinie hieroor baie sterk is. Party van die graad agts sal sê dit is ’n straf, iets wat vreeslik onregverdig en pynlik is.

Aan die anderkant sal meeste leerlinge in hoër grade sê dit is ’n seëning; ’n tradisie wat al vir jare lank plaasvind en nodig is om deel te word van die blou skool. Dit maak nie saak of jy nou saamstem of nie, die sottekamp het baie voordele wat gaan bydra tot jou skoolloopbaan in Windhoek Hoërskool.

Die eerste rede waarom die sottekamp ’n seëning is, is nie altyd maklik om te hoor nie. Die ego. Alhoewel nie almal wat graad agt toe kom te groot is vir hulle skoene nie, is daar wel ’n paar wat moet leer dat hulle weer op die onderste rang van die leer is. Daarom wys die sottekamp vir die graad agts dat hulle van onder af moet begin, net soos ’n mens dikwels moet doen in ’n nuwe seisoen van jou lewe.

Nog ’n voordeel is dat die kamp dit makliker maak om aan te pas by ’n nuwe skool met baie nuwe gesigte en om vinniger vriende maak. Die aktiwiteite wat die graad agts moet doen forseer hulle om met vreemdelinge te praat en saam te werk in ’n span. Dit maak dat ’n mens baie vinniger die mense in jou graad leer ken en wys sommer vroeg in die jaar almal se ware kleure.

Ons almal weet jy buig ’n boompie terwyl hy jonk is. Dieselfde beginsel word toegepas by die sottekamp. Dit leer die graad agts om ’n realistiese verwagting van lewe na hoërskool te hê; dat alle situasies doodeenvoudig nie altyd regverdig gaan wees nie. Leerlinge ervaar dat baie oomblikke in die lewe nie ideaal gaan wees nie. So, jy moet besluit om die beste te maak van die oomblik en positief te bly.

Aan die einde van die dag is die sottekamp ’n bietjie van al twee: ’n straf en ’n seëning. Terwyl jy by die kamp is, is dit moeilik en ongemaklik, maar as jy terug kyk sal jy sien hoe jou karakter gebou is en dat jy lesse geleer het wat jy die res van jou lewe sal saamdra. So die bal is in jou hande: raak vinnig negatief en maak die oomblik vir jouself onaangenaam, of besluit om die beste te maak daarvan en terug te kyk met goeie herinneringe.
