You snooze you loose

Swakopmund Secondary School held its annual stay awake some time ago which was hosted by the teachers. As usual the learners were thrilled and looked forward to yet another evening of challenging themselves to “stay awake” for about 12 consecutive hours.

It was an evening filled with eager beavers from both teachers and learners. The first activity to kick off the night was to witness challenge each other to drink a 2 liter cool drink in a specific time. This left the crowd amused and in need for more entertainment. The phenomenal upcoming artist-Black Dog, performed and made the learners get on their feet and bust some moves.

The grade 10’s had a karaoke challenge prepared and tested as well as showed how the participants were lyric fanatics by heart. According to Jennifer Mpahleni one of the participants, she felt shy at first but got the hang of it as soon as she went on stage, because she knew the lyrics very well. The matriculants on the other hand, made the stage their runway. Each class had 10 representatives who competed with the other classes for a mini-pageant, and wore specific fashion trends including vintage and sports, making it a bit tricky. In the end the grade 12D’s proved to be the fairest of them all and took the crown.

As the hours kept on ticking the LRC’s had a bloodcurdling, and spine-chilling challenge up their sleeves - the haunted hallway. According to a learner, Stella-Maris Kashindi, she felt that although it was the most terrifying challenge ever, but it was also the most memorable test at the stay awake.

The different stalls owned by various learners during the stay awake were greatly supported by both the teachers and learners. It served as a great platform to groom upcoming entrepreneurs among the learners. The stay awake was not entirely complete without a movie break; so at the final hours the hall was packed, learners grabbed popcorn, sat back and enjoyed a movie.
