Mamelodi Sundowns paid a glowing tribute to Peter Shalulile on Sunday after the Namibian striker became the all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier Soccer League. The forward, who netted his 130th PSL goal to surpass Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing record of 129, was celebrated in front of fans before the club’s match against Magesi FC.

Shalulile was presented with a framed jersey bearing the number 130 by club chairman Thlopie Motsepe and legend Trott Moloto. His teammates and technical staff formed a guard of honour, applauding him as he walked out to a standing ovation.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso praised Shalulile’s consistency and professionalism but explained his decision to rest the striker following a busy international break.

“Peter scored three goals for the national team, including a beautiful strike, but he came back tired from the trip,” Cardoso said. “Rayners is fresh and in form, so you have to decide who plays. If you risk Peter, you could lose him for the rest of the season. My job is not to pick who everyone wants, but who should play at that moment.”

Cardoso highlighted Sundowns’ attacking depth, with last season’s top scorer Rayners and striker Lebo Mothiba also in contention.

“Peter is fantastic, still scoring at 32, but I can’t rely on one striker to play seven matches in a row. We have three fantastic forwards and must manage them carefully to win not only today but throughout the month,” he added.
