Eat, sleep, ride!

Equestrianism, more popularly known as riding, horseback riding or horse-riding, refers to the skill of riding, driving, steeplechasing or vaulting with horses. This broad description includes the use of horses for practical working purposes, transportation, recreational activities, artistic or cultural exercises, and competitive sport.

Cielie Fourie, a grade eight learner, shared her thoughts on horse riding with us. “I really like it; it's my dream and I've been doing it since I was really young.” When I heard her speak so enthusiastically and passionately about the sport, I was amazed that at her age, she could still hold the same interest that she possessed at the tender age of two. When asked if she would advise others to take up this opportunity of a lifetime she said, “Yes, it is really fun. I like it more than idly sitting in the house.”

Another learner, Tabitha von Ludwiger, in grade nine, also shared her thoughts on horse-riding with us. “I find it relaxing and when I'm stressed, l go to the stables to clear my head.” On whether she would advise others to take up the challenge she answered, “I would, because it teaches you the ability to take care of something and you are held responsible for anything pertaining to the horse. So it also teaches responsibility.” Tabitha participates in horse-riding at the Gymkhana Academy.

At Windhoek Gymnasium, there are many learners of all grades taking part in this life changing riding experience. This is definitely a sport for all ages! Though I don't have any true experience riding a horse, I would be the first to say that I will surely give this a go.
