Fear the law, not the judge

Law is omnipresent and such an important part of our lives.

Andreas-Hamunyela Legal Practitioners is a young law firm, established in March 2021, on a tradition of building relationships and working alongside clients. The firm is a the brainchild of duo Joseph Andreas and Hafeni Hamunyela, and is focused on economic and timely resolution of commercial disputes and criminal cases. Particularly, they practice in the following areas: Administrative law, asset forfeiture, civil litigation, constitutional law, contract law, criminal law, debt collection, divorce and other family-related matters, labour law, legal advice and motor vehicle accident claims.

Andreas’ job is to advise and represent clients in court, before tribunals, High Court and lower courts.

“I am also in constant contact with other legal practitioners, advocates, prosecutors and others involved in various cases,” he says. Further, he conducts research and analysis of legal problems, interpreting laws, rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses.

As a partner in the firm, apart from the day-to-day administration, marketing, human resources and financial management of the firm, his ultimate responsibility is to unremittingly look after his clients’ interests by assisting them to understand cases against them, their legal rights and obligations, and the consequences of the decisions they may make in relation to the conduct of their matters. On average, his day revolves around coffee, legal research and meetings.

Choosing the career

What Andreas told his law professors, which was and still is true, is that law, being omnipresent and such an important part of our life, is one of the best tools to make people's lives better. Further, the fact that law is more thought-provoking than economics also inspired him to study the former.

“I hope the increase in artificial intelligence and technology will not extensively disrupt the practice of this noble profession,” Andreas says.

One professional superpower needed to purse this career is the most important superpower - speech clarity – which is simply the ability to speak clearly so others can understand you. Apart from the exciting courtroom drama and grateful clients, the practice of law is very stressful.

“I for one have a coffee cup that says ‘I am in charge of my life’,” he says.

The biggest high of the job is getting a judgment or ruling in your client’s favour.
