‘n Tydjie terug het ons as graad 10-klas na The Rock Lodge, Okahandja, vertrek vir ons graad 10-veldskool. Opgewonde en senuweeagtig het ons in die busse geklim, reg vir die week wat vir ons voorlê.

Ons het musiek gespeel en gesing en ek is amper doodseker Juffrou Janetta en Juffrou Andria wou uit die bus uitspring.

Ons het skaars by die hek ingery toe die bus stop en ons moes uitklim. Oom Jerome het homself en sy span aan ons voorgestel.

“Julle moet daaraan gewoond word om vuil te wees, want julle gaan heel week so lyk.” Dit was oom Jerome se woorde aan ons toe ons in ’n yskoue swembad moes inspring nadat ons net een ding kon uitgetrek het. Na die lekker koue bad moes ons soos varkies in die sand gaan rol. Met nat klere aan het ons in die saal gaan sit waar ons ons eerste lesing gekry het en reg daarna moes ons die eerste hindernis vir die week aandurf – in ons nat klere.

Om ons eerste dag af te sluit, was ons in spanne van vyf ingedeel en het ons nagmars geloop, waar ons nommerplate moes soek en die nommers van die plate moes neerskryf.

Dag twee was ’n vol program. Ons is in twee groepe ingedeel. Een groep het gaan abseil en die ander groep het ’n hindernisbaan gedoen. Die abseilery was lekker en uitdagend - veral vir dié wat hoogtevrees het. Na die hindernis en abseil het ons gaan “paintball” skiet en ’n “colourgest” gehou.

Die derde en laaste hindernis was sekerlik die uitdagendste een van al die hindernisse wat ons gedurende die week gedoen het. Hierdie hindernis het iets van alles gehad. Ons was bo-oor, onderdeur en deur modder – noem dit en ons was daardeur, maar tog was hierdie hindernis nie net die uitdagendste nie, maar ook die lekkerste.

Die aand het ons gebraai en net die laaste aand geniet. Na ete het ons gaan bergklim. Dit was ’n mooi uitsig van daarbo. Ons kon Okahandja se ligte sien – dit was ’n mooi manier om die veldskool af te sluit.

Ek glo die veldskool het ons as ’n groep nader aan mekaar gebring en ons het mekaar beter leer ken.
