As a candidate legal practitioner, Dean-Marlo Titus says his career highlights stem from being able to help others. He is employed at Henry Shimutwikeni and Co Inc, currently awaiting his admission as a legal practitioner of the High Court of the Namibia.

Titus started his journey at Henry Shimutwikeni and Co Inc. in 2020 by job shadowing and officially became an employee the same year.

Being passionate about whatever he does, whether in his personal or professional life, and a firm believer in hard work gives Titus a boost in his legal career and increases the legal service delivery of Henry Shimutwikeni and Co Inc.

“As a candidate legal practitioner, I have the opportunity to work in various areas of law in support of my principal,” Titus said. He currently works in the civil and criminal department.

“Pursuant to the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act of 1995, I have my right of audience to appear in any lower court of Namibia as well as in Chambers in the High Court,” he said. In addition, his duties extend to drafting commercial agreements in support of his principal, Mr Shimutwikeni, which include - without limitation - lease, partnership and non-disclosure agreements.

He also assists his principal in conveyancing in drafting sale agreements.

Titus’ first urgent application on which he assisted is one of the highlights of his career. He said he is still in awe of the work done by not only his principal in the matter but by their instructed advocates and cites the pure and diligent hard work in aiding a person who’d otherwise have no access to legal assistance as an awesome moment.

He added that it was an experience he will never forget.

The one-year anniversary of the #ShutItAllDown protest is another highlight in Titus’ career. He said he is proud of his colleagues who worked on the release of the detained protestors and added that that case solidified why he initially wanted to become a lawyer.

Titus is a firm believer in celebrating each and every achievement, regardless of how small it is, because of the strength, resilience and hard work it takes to achieve a goal.

He said it is for this reason that he celebrates everything.

“I celebrated my first application, my first application won, my first court appearance in the lower courts and my first criminal trial, amongst others, because I know my journey has not been easy, like many others’, and that warrants celebration,” he said.

Fun facts

I am a huge fan of Nicki Minaj, and can recite most - if not all - of her lyrics, and Frank Ocean.

I would rather binge-watch Netflix than go out. We are in a pandemic, after all.

I have watched all six seasons of ‘How to Get Away With Murder’ at least four times - in its entirety.

I have watched all ‘Star Wars’ films and I enjoyed each one.

I actually find ‘Friends’ hilarious.
