Brought to you by Namibia Media Holdings and My Zone, in partnership with First National Bank (FNB), Standard Bank and MTC, the Media Camp hosted at Out of Nature Country Lodge, 30 kilometers from Windhoek, saw learners from as far as Ongwediva receive weekend-long media and journalism training on 8 to 10 February.

The camp is for learners who are part of the Schools Newspaper Project.

The project provides 56 schools with two editions per year, which is produced by children for children.

The programme for the weekend covered a variety of topics such as the media landscape of Namibia, the basics of journalism, media ethics, multimedia and online journalism.

Yochanaan Coetzee, senior journalist at the Republikein, also provided an extensive session on photo journalism and managed to capture the attendees as he focused on “how photos can tell a story”. He also conducted a Q&A session where he provided the learners with the platform to receive tips on how to take better and more engaging photos.

This year My Zone partnered with the Media and Information Literacy Learning Initiative (MiLLi) in facilitating the programme and provided knowledge on fake news and staying cautious on social media platforms.

Mercy Fabianus, a learner from Delta Secondary School, said the media camp was informative, inspiring and fun.

“It gave the opportunity to celebrate my voice and tell my own stories without the fear of judgement,” she said.

Abigail Le Henner from Berg-Op Academy in Okahandja says she thoroughly enjoyed the camp and wished her entire editorial team could have been present.
