Sowing into the future

The Namibia National Students Organisation (Nanso) in the Oshana region recently set up a vegetable garden at Dr Frans Aupa Indongo Special School in Okandjengedi.
The initiative is aimed at promoting self-reliance in terms of food availability.
According to Nanso information, communication and technology officer Gift Amwaalwa, during visits to the school, they have always noticed a shortage of food and essential basic necessities. “The hope is that by producing their own vegetables, they will be able to consume their harvest, which they can sell to people in their community and get money to purchase basic needs,” she said.
Amwaalwa added that they hope to see more of the better-abled children and volunteers at the centre take an interest in agriculture and food production, as these activities have the ability to enhance living standards.
“We call on community members to assist in establishing permanent solutions to the problems faced by these children. Donations do not last; it is imperative to empower members of the community, whether they are living with disabilities or not.”
