Grade 3 teacher at Roots Gymnasium

Quote: "Being part of something new is truly an adventure. Roots Gymnasium is giving me the opportunity to influence the part in the learners' lives that gave them hope, love and taught them to believe in themselves."

When and why did you decide to become a teacher?

In grade 11 I finally decided I wanted to follow a career within the education sphere. I always loved children and wanted to make a difference in their lives. They teach me so much every day, and working with them is a privilege I cherish.

What is the best part about being a teacher?

For me the best part about being a teacher is seeing the excitement and unconditional love children have for their teacher. All the hugs and “teacher, teacher” when they are looking or you, continue to make my day every day. I love seeing them and seeing how much they trust you as their teacher.

Can you tell us of your journey towards becoming a teacher?

In 2017 I started studying at the North West University campus in Potchefstroom where I pursued a B.Ed degree. This was truly one of the most fun times in my life, and the subjects and content have played a critical role in forming and moulding me into the teacher I am today.

What has been the highlight of your teaching career thus far?

I recently started teaching at a brand-new school called Roots Gymnasium, which has been an amazing experience thus far. Looking back at where I started, and where I am today, I am proud of how much I’ve grown as a teacher and as a person.

What are some of your hobbies or things you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love crocheting and exercising when I have spare time. These are things I enjoy doing and helps me to take a break from the stress and routine.

What lessons have you learned from your learners?

My learners teach me to always where a smile, no matter what. We get caught up with the negativity and stress too much in life, and children teach us that it’s important for us to never lose sight of the beautiful and wonderful things and opportunities in life. I’ve never entered my classroom where my learners don’t have smile son their faces.

What is the one thing that keeps you going every day?

What keeps me going every day is my learners. I hope to help and assist each learner throughout each term, so we can see them grow and develop into strong and amazing human beings. I always want to motivate and inspire my learners to never give up and to continue to believe in themselves and what they are capable of.
