The last 40 days

It’s in the final days for most grade 12’s at school. The 40 days are usually the last days right before the grade 12 national examinations. We spoke to a few learners to hear if they think that the 40 days celebrations are necessary and why. Here is what they...

In my own opinion I think that the 40 days of the 12’s get is a great thing. This time of year students get time to relax and let go of all thoughts and worries regarding school work, since they have been busy with school work non-stop since grade 11. It gives them a small amount of time to enjoy being a learner for the final time.

It is not necessary because it is time consuming and time isn’t on our side. We could have covered a lot more work during the 40 days and some kids even consume alcohol or make use of drugs during this time, while they could be preparing and focusing on their examinations during this time. This is the perfect time to rest and catch up on revision

I personally think that the 40 days tradition is relevant. Reason being that at a point in our final year at our school we have to feel like we really are the seniors of Duinesig High School and therefore we have to leave a mark to be remembered, as well as just to release the stress within us by just having a little fun and breaking some rules, but in the most polite way.

I think it’s both good and bad, because at least the learners get to do what they feel but when they have the opportunity they overdo it. It’s not necessary because these days are given at a time when learners should be preparing for their exams. If they seriously want it they can do it at least a month before exams. It’s both pointless and embarrassing to be enjoying yourself and failing your exams in the end.

Yes, I think 40 days is needed. Come on, it’s a day where you can bend school rules and us seniors look forward to that day. And why cancel it? It’s not compulsory. If you don’t like it, you don’t participate, simple as that.

After a 12 year journey of obedience and respect to the social community and legacy of the school a number of days are alright to be given out to ending seniors to gain the relief before stepping into the exam room that is going to determine their future.

40 days is necessary, because it is a great time to close off before the exams. It is a great time to unwind. As grade 12’s, this is the only time we can somehow bend the rules at school. 40 Days serves as a reminder that soon we won’t be school learners anymore and that we need to enjoy your final days at school.

No, personally I don’t think the 40 days ceremony is necessary for the grade 12’s, because it’s a waste of time and energy. I would rather study, prepare myself for the exams and secure my future than waste the little time I have left. My advice is; study hard now and have fun after you have succeeded.

It enables vast communication between different pupils. Secondly, it is a tradition of leaving something unforgettable. I believe you should have fun before you get serious.

40 days is a great chance for the grade 12’s to bond and be together. Since the examinations are approaching, this could be our last chance for all of us to have fun together. Since many of us aren’t going to the matric farewell and we will soon go our separate ways. 40 days is a good way for the grade 12’s to share their last memories together.
