Where do learners feel safer - at home or at school?
Mariselle Stofberg
With all the back and forth regarding whether to continue with face-to-face teaching and learning, My Zone asked a few learners from Otjiwarongo where they feel safest during the pandemic.

Khitago Valtree Eises

There is no guarantee where Covid-19 lives so students are not necessarily safe at school because Covid-19 is a real threat; nor are they safe at home as their family members can bring this virus to them. So I feel all we can do is to follow the measures for the reduction of the spread of this pandemic and, most importantly, always remember to pray.

I feel that it is safer at school. The reason behind it is regardless of all the people around, there are teachers to supervise and make sure that all protocols are followed such as the wearing of masks and the disinfection of surfaces after the surface was used. At home, parents go to work and leave kids at home where they do not adhere to the protocols so I feel my safety is taken care of 100% at school.

I prefer staying home during the pandemic because it is safer in my opinion, as you don't have to be in large crowded classrooms and in physical contact with everyone. At home you are isolated from large crowds of people and can work at your own pace with online learning .

Rimunee Kahorongo

It is safer and more productive to go to school because at school social distancing, wearing of masks, sanitising and disinfecting of surfaces is practised, which not only leads to reduction of the Covid-19 pandemic spread but also allows the learners to be safe, healthy and productive in their schoolwork .

Nduuviteko E. Ingo

I feel safer at home than at school due to the rise of Covid-19 infections. At home I have less physical interaction with people, which reduces the risk of getting infected.

Kariiue Katjikonde

I feel that staying at home is safer for the students. As the number of people at gatherings is being decreased to reduce the spread of Covid-19, it should include the number of people who go to school. Some classes have up to 40 students, which is not safe for the students and the teachers.
