A brand new Swakopmund Junior Town Council for the year 2020-2021 was inaugurated in August.

Two of the 15 members are from Westside High School: Liam Labuschagne and Vennesa Kativa. Both learners are extremely excited and thrilled to have been elected and cannot wait to get busy.

Many people have heard of the Junior Town Council (JTC), but have no idea what it is or what it stands for.

The JTC is a group of students from various schools in Swakopmund. They work with and for the municipality of Swakopmund as a non-profit organisation. They try and show teenagers that you can have fun without breaking the law. In the light of the current pandemic, their reign was a bit slurred but that did not stop them.

They are currently busy with a face mask drive for the less fortunate and in the near future they are planning on selling ribbons to raise awareness on gender based violence, where all profits will be donated to a cause fighting GBV.

The JTC is also well known for its annual Santa Shoe Box Project.

During their term, the town councillors wish to see change, so they try to be that change.

We wish Liam and Venessa all the best and hope they will inspire their fellow students to also be the change they wish to see in the world.

The executive committee of the Swakopmund Junior Town Council for 2021 are:

Kaedi Schrader - junior mayor (Private School Swakopmund)

Jessy Abraham – deputy junior mayor (Namib High School)

Ernesto de Jesus – public relations officer (Namib High School)

Uendjii Kangueehi – treasurer (Pro-Ed Academy)

Ashton Harding – secretary (Private School Swakopmund)
