With the University of Namibia (Unam) exploring the idea of increasing the entry level requirement from 25 to 35 points, The Zone visited Augustineum Secondary School to ask learners whether, if implemented, this would work...

Ester Kamati
Thomas Uukongo

No, it will not work because not everybody can achieve 35 points to study, even if it is their passion. For me, it will be better if the system remains the same.

Shiwavanu Kalumbu

Not all kids are good academically, so I don’t think it will be good to increase it to 35 points, because 25 points is good for all of us, as we will be able to attain it. So it will be better if it remains the same.

Gidino //Hoeses

Many learners will not be able to achieve 35 points and they may not get a chance to study. Therefore, I think the entry points should remain the same.

Pales Simeon

In my view, I think they must leave the points’ requirement as it is now, because, for example, some of us are not smart enough, but we can at least get 25 points, rather than getting 35.

Conceicao Pedro

I think the points should be increased, because the country will have more qualified people and hardworking people. And if the points are higher, it will motivate many more people to really work hard to follow a career path.

Nicoline Libbert

It really isn’t a good idea. Most of us can only achieve between 20 to 25 points, in order for us to study. University is already killing us with its fees.

Bernaltu Rosalia

School is not for everyone, so 25 points is something that everyone can obtain. Increasing it will not work out in my view, as 35 points is just hard to obtain for our Namibian kids.

Nadine James

No, it will not work, because some people try their best to get as higher marks, so they can become someone in life. That’s why it should remain as it is, and some people are not smart enough to get high marks such as 35 points and above.

Shipango Mathew

Achieving 35 points in five subjects is not necessary for us. It is a lot of points, just to obtain in five subjects, and I think it is best to just keep it to 25 points in five subjects.

Nanguei Katjihingua

I as a young person, I think the entry points to Unam should remain the same, because not every learner can achieve or reach those points (35). If they continue with this, it will be too much pressure on the learners.

Quindeline Eixas

I think the points should remain the way they are, because not all the children are going to be able to reach the needed points. This might even lead to children dropping out of school, because they don’t want to repeat the same grade again.

Chellane !Gases

I do not think they must increase the points to 35, because most people are already struggling with jobs, and if you increase, it will be worse for people that are not good academically. I think it is a bad idea.
