Youth team off to Botswana

port, in collaboration with Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), held an official send-off for the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region Five youth team on 29 November.

The games take place from 6 to 16 December in Gaborone, Botswana.

Speaking at the event, Team Namibia’s chef de mission, Anton Langerman, said the team was selected through the National Youth Games that took place in May and will represent Namibia at the under-20 youth games.

Langerman said the athletes come from all 14 regions of the country.

He added that Namibia will be taking part in athletics, athletics for the visually impaired, basketball, boxing, football, netball, swimming, tennis, judo and volleyball.

NSC chief administrator Freddy Mwiya said in terms of section 30 of the Sports Act, it is their mandate to award national colours to the team.

Two members, who are going as officials, were not awarded national colours.

Sports minister Erastus Uutoni said sport has the ability to create employment and reduce youth joblessness in the country.

He said citizens should be empowered through sport and that athletes should support each other across all sport codes.

The athletes said they were forward to the games and were eager to bring back medals to the country.
