A football tournament presented by Brave Warriors and African Stars striker Willy ‘Awillo’ Stephanus will kick off today at the Khomasdal Stadium. It will be the second tournament Stephanus is hosting, following the inaugural edition last year.
The competition this year has attracted a total of 24 teams competing for bragging rights and prizes.
Organised by businessman Billa Kandjii and sponsored by The Palm Hotel in Windhoek, the competition will showcase some of the local teams the country has to offer.
“The competition will commence from Friday to Sunday at the Khomasdal Stadium.
“The total amount reserved for this tournament is N$40 000, with the winning team taking home.
“The winning team in this competition will walk away with N$20 000, while the team that finishes second will take home N$10 000.
“The two teams that bow out in the semi-final will each be compensated with N$5 000,”Kandjii said.
Kandjii revealed that premier league players are allowed to compete and the tournament will not restrict the teams.
Willy Stephanus said he is honoured to host this tournament which will keep some of the players busy during the off-season, as well as providing a platform for those that are willing to play.
“I think first of all, I have to thank Billa who came to me with this idea last year.
“I also want to thank our sponsor Palm Hotel for coming on board and sponsoring the medals and trophy.
“The objective behind the tournament is to give an opportunity for young talented players out there and that is why it is an open tournament,” Stephanus remarked.
Stephanus, attributed his football success and journey to tournaments of such nature and that is why he is adamant that the tourney can elevate a few players.
Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, Chantelle Mouton expressed thanks to the organisers for making the hotel part of the competition.
“I would like to thank Billa and Awillo for bringing Palm Hotel on board because I think this is a great initiative.
“Palm Hotel’s position in this tournament is that we are sponsoring the trophies and medals that the successful teams will collect. May the best team win,” Mouton noted.
The entrance fee for spectators is N$30 for adults and N$10 for children.
