Sports ministry’s executive director Erastus Haitengela has assured the nation that the finance ministry has given the green light on the budget for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games.

Haitengela made the remarks yesterday at the AUSC local organising committee’s first official press conference for the games, marking the 100-day countdown to the event from 4 to 13 July in Windhoek.

“At this juncture, I want to inform you that we have now been informed by the ministry of finance that our budget [for the Games] has been approved. We are committed to creating a lasting legacy that will benefit not only our youth but also the entire region for generations to come,” he noted.

Even though the exact monetary amount could not yet be disclosed, citing the sensitivity of the information, he reaffirmed the ministry’s priority to provide athletes with the necessary support to thrive on the international stage while pursuing their passions.

“Namibia stepped in to host these games following the withdrawal of Mozambique, leaving us with a significantly shortened preparation period. As we speak today, it was less than six months instead of the usual two years,” he noted.

Inclusivity and anti-doping education

Despite these challenges, Haitengela assured that preparations are progressing exceptionally well to accommodate the circumstances.

He thanked the efforts of the local organising committee for closing the logistical gaps and ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place for the games.

“The renovation of key facilities designated to host the competitions is well underway. We are prioritising critical areas such as athletic safeguarding, inclusivity and anti-doping education. Workshops will be conducted to ensure that all participants are well informed on these essential aspects, thereby upholding the high standard of integrity and fair play,” he noted.

Speaking at the occasion, local organising committee chairperson Dr Ndeulipula Hamutumwa (also president of the Namibia National Olympic Committee) discussed the progress made in the past three months since the country stepped up to the task after Mozambique’s withdrawal due to reported adverse weather conditions.

Hamutumwa indicated that the event will bring together the best young athletes from across the region to compete, grow and inspire future generations.

“A total of ten countries – Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe – will bring more than 2,500 athletes and officials to the Land of the Brave to showcase their talent across 12 disciplines: athletics, basketball, boxing, e-sport, football, judo, karate, netball, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball,” he said.

He added that athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities are included in the program. “So when we talk about athletics, we include Special Olympics and Paralympics,” he noted.

Call on volunteers

Hamutumwa said one exciting aspects in the build-up to the games will be the torch relay, a symbol of unity and anticipation.

He assured that plans are in place to ensure that the relay is a celebration of sport and culture, engaging communities along the route and allowing the public to be part of this historic moment.

Calling on community engagement and volunteer involvement, he said: “The success of the games is not just about competition, but about bringing people together. Volunteer programs are open, and we encourage the Namibian public, especially our youth, to step forward and be part of history.

“This is an opportunity to learn, contribute, and gain valuable experience in organising international sporting events. We also invite local businesses and organisations to join us in making this event a success by offering support, services and promotions that will enhance the overall experience for visitors,” Hamutumwa said.
