Archers take aim with Cupid’s arrow
The Swakopmund Archery Club hosted its annual Target Archery Valentine’s Shoot at the SFC Sport Club in Swakopmund on Saturday and Sunday.
The event saw archers from a wide range of age groups and bow classes, all stepping up to the shooting line in preparation for the upcoming 76th South African National and Regional Championships, set to take place in Johannesburg from 27–29 March 2026.
The competition had the archers shoot a double WA 720 on Saturday and a single WA 720 on Sunday. Each WA 720 consists of 72 scoring arrows with each arrow accumulating a maximum of 10 points.
The double WA 720 round in particular tested the competitors’ accuracy and endurance.
While the competition concluded with elimination rounds and medal matches, the aim extended beyond podium finishes. The focus was on providing archers with an opportunity to achieve or improve qualifying scores required for the Johannesburg championships.
The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) congratulates Babette Taljaard and Jacqueline Coetzee on achieving the necessary qualifying scores. They will now join Jannie Meuwesen as part of the Namibian national team selection representing the country in Johannesburg.
With the competition taking place on the day of love, archers were encouraged to dress in pink or white, adding a playful Valentine’s flair to the otherwise focused and competitive atmosphere. The themed attire sparked light-hearted moments and camaraderie between ends.
The next opportunity for archers to qualify for national colours will be held in Windhoek on 7–8 March 2026 at the Windhoek Archery Club range at Yellowstone Trails.
