The Transforming Education youth advocacy workshop recently took place over the weekend in Windhoek at the Windhoek Palm Hotel. This highly anticipated event was organised in response to critical issues surrounding education that were brought up during the 2022 Transforming Education summit.

Under the guidance of Doreen Lyomba, the Transforming Education youth coordinator, the workshop aimed to empower and engage young individuals in taking an active role in shaping their own educational experiences.

Lyomba emphasised the importance of placing youth at the forefront of decision-making processes regarding education, allowing them to voice their opinions and contribute to meaningful change.

Drawing about 100 motivated participants, the workshop provided a platform for young individuals to learn about effective advocacy plans and strategies. The attendees were eager to enhance their understanding of the education system and explore ways to address its challenges through collaborative efforts.

Over the course of two days, the workshop covered a diverse range of topics, ensuring that participants acquired a comprehensive skill set and knowledge base related to education advocacy.

Building effective partnerships and networks, participants gained insight into the significance of forging alliances and establishing networks within the education sector. This focus on collaboration emphasised the power of collective action and the ability to drive impactful change through combined efforts.

Essential tools

An introduction to project management principles and the fundamentals of project management equipped the attendees with essential tools and techniques to effectively plan, execute and monitor education initiatives. This knowledge was aimed at enhancing their capacity to lead successful projects and achieve tangible outcomes.

Recognising the unique perspectives and strengths of young individuals, the workshop emphasised the importance of fostering a youth-led movement in education advocacy. Through interactive sessions, participants explored ways to amplify their voices and mobilise their peers to drive meaningful change within their communities.

The event also provided practical guidance on developing comprehensive and impactful advocacy plans. Attendees learnt about strategic approaches to identifying key issues, setting goals and implementing effective communication strategies to influence policymakers and stakeholders.

Understanding the dynamics of policy-making and advocacy within the education sector was a crucial component of the workshop. Participants explored the avenues available to them for influencing policy decisions and shaping the educational landscape through evidence-based arguments and persuasive communication.

Action planning and next steps

The workshop concluded with an emphasis on action planning and identifying the next steps to translate the knowledge and skills acquired into tangible outcomes. Participants were encouraged to develop action plans that reflected their personal goals and aspirations, ensuring a continued commitment to advocacy even after the workshop's conclusion.

By covering these comprehensive topics, the Transforming Education youth advocacy workshop provided attendees with an understanding of the multifaceted nature of education advocacy. Equipped with newfound knowledge and skills, the young participants left the event empowered and motivated to play an active role in transforming education within their communities and beyond.
