The Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) League’s second weekend at the University of Namibia (Unam) Gym Hall saw Unam Phoenix deliver an emphatic 85-48 statement win over Ongos Shooting Stars.

It was a women’s premier league clash that looked competitive on paper, with Phoenix as the four-time reigning champions and Ongos coming in as last season’s runners-up.

But the game was effectively settled in the opening 20 minutes.

Phoenix dominated early, taking the first two quarters 34-11 and 20-7 to build a commanding 54-18 halftime lead and never looked back.

The second half was more balanced at 16-15 and 15-15, but by then the contest was already out of reach. Phoenix led for 38:32 of the 40 minutes, with their biggest lead stretching to 45 points at 82-37.

Pressure and possession

Phoenix’s win was built on pressure, possession control and scoring volume.

They did not shoot the lights out, going 34/94 from the field (36.2%) and 7/30 from the stripe (23.3%), but they made up for it by completely disrupting Ongos’ rhythm.

Phoenix racked up 33 steals and forced a staggering 49 Ongos turnovers, constantly getting into passing lanes and turning defence into offence. Those takeaways translated into a dominant 44-14 advantage in points off turnovers, and it is where the game was won.

They also created second chances, crashing the offensive glass for a 27-11 advantage and edging the overall rebound count 57-54. Those extra possessions led to a 14-8 edge in second-chance points.

In the half-court, Phoenix got cleaner looks, especially inside, finishing with a 48-30 advantage in points in the paint.

Their ball movement was also sharper, composed and cohesive on offence, finishing with 20 assists to Ongos’ 12.

Ongos struggled to find any rhythm, shooting just 18/56 from the field (32.1%). From outside the arc, they managed only 3/18 (16.7%), and they could not capitalise at the line either, going 9/23 (39.1%).

Too many possessions ended before a shot even went up, and when they did get looks, they struggled to convert. That combination made it almost impossible to stay competitive against a team applying constant pressure.

Top performers

Ashley Linda (#8) led Phoenix with an outstanding all-round display, recording a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. She added five assists and four steals, finishing with a game-high +38 in 28:16.

She was efficient where it mattered, shooting 8/14 from the field and knocking down 4/7 from outside the arc, providing a steady scoring option throughout.

Deandra Fossi (#22) delivered one of the most impactful performances of the game, finishing with 15 points and 10 steals in a rare points-and-steals double-double.

She added three rebounds and two assists, posted a +35, and shot 6/10 from the field. Her defensive instincts set the tone for Phoenix’s pressure throughout the game.

Reflecting on the performance, Fossi said the difference came down to effort and unity.

“[I did better] on offence and defence. I gave my all. My teammates made it easy for me, and I made it easy for them. We were just all there for each other,” she said.

Phoenix also handed a debut to Stefania Karegeya (#14), who contributed two points.

No offensive anchor

For Ongos, the lack of a consistent scoring threat told its own story. They had no double-digit scorer, with Finna Namweipo (#8) leading the way with nine points and eight rebounds.

Patricia Uapunduka (#13) and Helena Shumbwa (#6) added eight points each, with Uapunduka also pulling down nine rebounds. Without a go-to option to settle their offence, Ongos struggled to build any momentum.

One bright spot came from Frieda Uusiku (#11), who was efficient off the bench with four points on a perfect 2/2 from the field, along with six rebounds in 14 minutes.

Despite the heavy defeat, Ongos remain focused on improving. Small forward Lavinia Uutoni (#1) said the team can still take positives from their effort.

“We definitely need to practise more and make it work with the players that we have. There’s more to us [than what we displayed on court today]. We just need better communication and more practise,” she said.
