Boilermaker: Gotlieb
MulongeniThe responsibilities of boilermakers amongst many are to build, erect, repair, test and maintain all types of boilers, tanks and pressure vessels, and perform structural and plate work on dust, air, gas, steam, oil, water and other liquid-tight containers. Boilermakers also erect and install boilers, regularly working on scaffolds, and repair and maintain existing boilers and related metal products. “Boilermakers are crafty people and we work mostly with metal. You design something and then work on it or construct it using metal,” says Gotlieb Mulongeni who works as a boilermaker.
“A boilermaker is very knowledge-able. We design, we understand our work well, we take measurements and have many other skills that come in handy for many other industries outside of the profession,” says Mulongeni.
He says people who are hardworking, physically fit, and not afraid of working in confined spaces can become boiler- makers.
