Clinical Psychologist: Harriet Knott

Clinical psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders. Some of the more common disorders that might be treated include learning disabilities, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
Harriet Knott is a clinical psychologist.
She describes her role as working with people and diagnosing problems of a mental, behavioural and emotional nature. “We may work in private practice, rehabilitation clinics, hospitals or educational settings,” says Knott.
She adds that as a clinical psychologist she has a responsibility to be unbiased and non-judgmental when working with her patients and use therapeutic measures to assist patients to improve their emotional and psychological wellbeing.
Knott says she is fascinated by the way humans behave, think and feel.
“The human brain is the most remarkable organ in the body and it is because of this that I was inspired to take the career direction I have,” says Knott.
Clinical psychology is the psychological specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioural health care for individuals and families; consultation to agencies and communities; training, education and supervision; and research-based practice. A clinical psychologist should be a good listener, be able to read non-verbal communication signs and have empathy for human difficulties.
