Legal secretary: Judith Meyer

Legal secretaries, also called administrative assistants or legal assistants, perform the daily clerical functions required for the efficient operation of a legal office. Beyond the usual filing, typing, dictation and phone-answering duties of the secretary, legal secretaries possess specialized skills unique to the legal profession. Legal secretaries prepare correspondence and type legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery documents, and subpoenas.
Judith Meyer is a legal secretary at Sisa Namandje & Co. She started off as a messenger in the 90s and slowly worked herself up. Legal secretaries often interact with the client before they actually see the lawyers. The other added responsibility is updating clients' files that has to be done daily.
“I love my job and seeing how the law can empower people and assit those in need,” she says. The large majority of legal secretaries work in law firms. However, corporate legal departments, government, public interest firms and the judiciary also employ legal secretaries.
