Physiotherapist: Munashe Chinyama

“Physiotherapy is a profession that deals with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of various conditions using physical means like exercise, heat and ultrasound. We treat back and neck pain, sports injuries, movement disorders like stroke, respiratory or breathing conditions like pneumonia, help patients with disabilities and many other conditions,” says Munasha Chinyama, a physiotherapist by profession.
He works with seeing patients either in a hospital intensive care unit or general ward; in an outpatient department or with a sports team at the training ground.
“We educate on prevention of injury, we encourage early referral to a hospital, we treat early, we prevent secondary disabilities from occurring and we promote early return to work, or advocate vocational training to impart new skills when a disabling injury occurs. We always focus on the individual as a whole and work towards restoring functional independence,” he explains.
He adds that passion for the sick is key in the physiotherapy field. “Good interpersonal skills and compassion are important as well, because we interact directly with real life problems that patients bring to us,” he says.
