Setting a career goal aids in developing a clear image of one's future as well as providing a target for progress and a way to influence one's activities and development.

In an interview with this publication, Willem Amutenya, a student leadership development officer at the University Of Namibia (Unam) at the Ogongo campus in Omusati Region, said it is important to understand what students want to achieve in their careers.

Amutenya further explained that while selecting a career path can pose challenges, once an individual discovers their preferred vocation, it becomes easier to set goals.

"If someone is a university student, they need to understand competencies; thousands of people [can choose the same career], but the uniqueness that one comes with will determine success," he said.

Focus

Amutenya, who was once a student representative council president at Unam, said remaining dedicated and focused on goals and planning accordingly to achieve them was one thing he did right.

As much as he did it right, it was not easy to balance and achieve his goals in both leadership and academics, he acknowledged.

"One has to ensure that time management is done correctly, surround yourself with a good cycle, and have good friends around you – if your friends have the same goal and focus, all of you will prosper," he said.

Amutenya said at one point he floundered because there was no balance between studies and other activities. Nevertheless, he had a supportive environment at all times.

He also highlighted that, in the present context, it is crucial to manage one's social environment. He pointed out that social media poses a significant challenge and often distracts many young individuals from their essential goals.

Transformative power

Rosalia Joseph, a medical entomologist and 'Forbes Africa 30 Under 30' achiever, said as a young professional and dedicated youth leader, she understands the transformative power of setting and achieving goals.

"To learners and students embarking on the threshold of their professional journey, I offer this guidance: Begin by envisioning your aspirations with clarity and precision."

She added that one should take comfort in the fact that education provides the tools to excel.

She emphasised the importance of balancing both mental and physical wellbeing.

"Remember, the journey is as valuable as the destination, so celebrate every win, no matter how small," she stressed.

Joseph, who is also a Mandela Washington Fellowship alumni, said the journey has profoundly shaped her as a youth leader.

"It provided unparalleled exposure and expanded my network, but more importantly, it honed my leadership skills and fostered a deep commitment to community-driven change and charity, giving me the ability to address challenges in my community and inspire my successors," Joseph said.
