Clarence reflects on leadership and growth
WHS head boy Clarence Shaningwa describes his tenure as both demanding and transformative, offering insight into the realities of student leadership.
In an interview conducted on 20 March, Clarence outlined a daily routine shaped by responsibility and discipline. His mornings begin before lessons, preparing for assembly and ensuring proceedings run smoothly. While attending classes, his academic schedule is often interrupted by urgent matters requiring his attention.
Break times, he explained, are rarely restful. Instead, they are spent on duty or in meetings addressing school concerns. After lessons, responsibilities continue with supervision, planning, and communication, often extending into the evening through emails and preparation.
Among the challenges he faces are managing unexpected situations, particularly those involving learner discipline, as well as navigating difficult interactions with parents and teachers. In such moments, Clarence emphasised the importance of remaining calm, respectful and composed.
Balancing leadership with academics and personal life requires careful planning. He studies during free periods and late at night, while reserving time at the end of the week to rest and maintain his well-being.
Clarence described his experience at WHS as “life-changing”, saying it has revealed his strengths while pushing him beyond his limits. The role, he noted, has strengthened his resilience, discipline, and ability to adapt.
He pointed to major school events, including athletics and cultural gatherings, as moments of pride. Representing the school during these occasions, he said, reinforced a sense of unity and responsibility.
Looking ahead, Clarence encouraged future student leaders to manage their time effectively and lead with integrity. Despite the pressures, he said the experience has been deeply rewarding, shaping both his character and outlook.
