New Grade 8s settle into Windhoek High life
Starting high school is often a mix of excitement and uncertainty. For Grade 8 learners at Windhoek High School (WHS), the transition from primary school to a new environment has already proven to be a memorable experience, shaped by tradition, challenge and community.
In interviews conducted by the school’s editorial team, several learners reflected on their first weeks. One pupil, recently named “Sot of the Year”, described WHS as “the best school in the entire country, if not the world”. They said their expectations had not only been met but exceeded, highlighting the welcoming attitude of senior learners as a key factor in helping them settle in.
Many admitted they had initially felt nervous, particularly about the orientation process. However, most said the experience helped them adjust quickly and better understand the school’s expectations and culture.
The Grade 8 camp played a central role in this transition. Learners said it taught them important values such as teamwork, perseverance and humility. Activities like the obstacle course stood out, encouraging cooperation and mutual support among peers.
Social events also helped strengthen their sense of belonging. The newcomers’ braai allowed learners to connect in a relaxed setting, while the newcomers’ concert, guided by LRC leaders, encouraged them to step out of their comfort zones and build confidence.
School spirit was evident during events such as the swimming gala, where even non-participants enjoyed supporting their peers. The Broom and Mop Dance added to the excitement, with learners describing it as energetic and social.
Despite some challenges, particularly during orientation, most agreed that the experience was rewarding. As one learner put it, their journey so far has been “very unexpected”.
Although it is still early in the year, the Grade 8 class of 2026 appears to be embracing life at WHS with enthusiasm and resilience.
