Rejoice reflects on leadership pressures and growth
WHS head girl Rejoice Karegeya describes her leadership experience as both demanding and rewarding, offering insight into the realities of guiding a large student body.
Karegeya says that no two days in her role are the same. While some mornings begin calmly with ensuring that LRC members are present at their posts and attending scheduled meetings with staff, others are far more demanding. These busier days often involve extensive behind-the-scenes planning, including organising orientation for Grade 8 learners, coordinating schedules and responding to unexpected changes.
She identified her own perfectionism as one of the greatest challenges she has faced. Karegeya said she has had to learn how to adapt more effectively, explaining that stepping back, reassessing situations and focusing on solutions has helped her manage pressure more constructively.
Balancing academic responsibilities with leadership duties remains an ongoing challenge. As an AS-level student, she prioritises both her studies and prefect obligations during the week, often leaving personal time and additional tasks for weekends. She noted that without careful organisation, maintaining this balance can quickly become overwhelming.
Reflecting on what the role has taught her, Karegeya highlighted the importance of endurance and communication. She said the position requires constant readiness to handle pressure, as well as the ability to engage effectively with learners, teachers and parents.
Looking ahead, she encouraged future leaders to support one another and remain united. She emphasised the importance of respecting different perspectives and maintaining strong relationships within the leadership team.
Karegeya also advises future head girls not to let the role define them entirely, urging them to pursue interests and friendships beyond their leadership responsibilities while continuing to serve their school community with dedication.
