Celebrating archives and the art of literature
World Book and Copyright Day
The Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) held a World Book and Copyright Day event under the theme “Read Your Way” at the National Library and Archives last week, in commemoration of Archives Week, which was observed from 9 to 13 June.To kick off the week, the official opening was graced by the presence of representatives from various prominent institutions.
During her welcoming remarks, NLAS Director Sarah Negumbo stated that reading is not a one-size-fits-all journey but a personal one.
“Whether one reads for information, for your imagination, or for inspiration, every experience expands knowledge, creativity and understanding.”
Speaking on behalf of the Director of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), the keynote address was delivered by M’kariko Amagulu, the Director of Arts at the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC). She highlighted the importance of such a day as an opportunity to honour local authors, illustrators, publishers and other creatives who tell our stories, preserve our languages, and reflect the unique experiences of our communities.
“By upholding copyright laws, we can ensure these creators receive the recognition and compensation they deserve, which in turn sustains a thriving local creative industry,” Amagulu explained.
The event also featured a spelling bee in which primary school learners took part. Six primary schools were represented in the competition, namely Moses van der Byl, Augeikhas, Suiderhof, St Barnabas, Bet-El and Herman Gmeiner.
The spelling bee was grouped into two categories: one for Grades 4 and 5, and the other for Grades 6 and 7.
The top three contestants from each category were rewarded accordingly. The results are as follows:
