One world, many voices: Hage wins Clash of the Choirs
The powerful harmony of young voices filled the Zoo Park last weekend as school choirs gathered for the Clash of the Choirs competition. Organised by the Victory Youth Group, the event aimed to motivate learners under a “Back to School” theme, encouraging young people to stay inspired in their studies and faith.
One of the most memorable moments of the event came from Hage Geingob High School, whose choir delivered a passionate performance that ultimately earned them first place, marking their first victory in a competition of this scale in four years. The choir, consisting of approximately 25 members, impressed the judges and audience with a mix of soulful renditions and self-composed songs that showcased their vocal strength and musical creativity.
Lead vocalist Mario Matongo described the experience as both emotional and rewarding. “Winning the competition was a rewarding moment that made all our hard work worthwhile,” he said, reflecting on the weeks of preparation, rehearsals and teamwork that went into their performance.
The competition featured seven schools: Hage Geingob High School, A. Shipena Secondary School, Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School, Windhoek Technical High School, Acacia High School, Eldorado Secondary School and Havana High School. After a competitive showcase of musical talent, A. Shipena Secondary School secured second place, while Windhoek Technical High School took third place.
The event was attended by Sanet Steenkamp, who served as the guest of honour. In her keynote address, she encouraged learners to value second chances and remain committed to their education and personal growth.
Guiding the choir from Hage Geingob High School was their teacher and guardian, Mr Hitanwa, who praised the learners for their dedication. He described the event as “an empowering way for learners to express their voices and follow the path of God, connecting with a faith that society needs today.”
Beyond the recognition, the victory also came with N$30 000 for the school, along with a floating trophy. For the choir members, however, the experience meant more than the prize itself. It was a moment of unity, faith and artistic expression that reminded them of the power of music to inspire and bring people together.
For the Hage choir, the triumph at Clash of the Choirs was not only a celebration of talent, but also a testament to perseverance, teamwork and the belief that when voices unite, they can create something truly powerful.
