Diamond profits fuel local growth
Namibia’s diamonds are known around the world for their quality and rarity. Yet, their true value extends far beyond international markets. Through the NAMDIA Foundation, the wealth generated from Namibia’s diamonds is reinvested into the country’s communities, creating opportunities in education, healthcare, and youth development.
Despite the industry’s protracted downturn, the Foundation has continued to transform the value of Namibia’s diamonds into meaningful social impact across the country.
Investing in Education and Namibia’s Future
Education remains one of the central pillars of the NAMDIA Foundation’s work. Through its Bursary Scheme, the Foundation continues to support Namibian students from across the country in pursuing tertiary education in fields critical to national development, including engineering, geology, energy, and medicine. Students are enrolled at institutions such as the Namibia University of Science and Technology, the University of Namibia, Stellenbosch University, and the University of Zambia.
The programme continues to produce encouraging results, with several students successfully completing their studies and others progressing steadily through their academic programmes.
During the most recent financial year, the Foundation further strengthened its support to bursary recipients through a Bursary Students Empowerment and Support Programme, bringing students together for leadership development, mentorship, and personal growth training. The initiative was designed to support students beyond financial assistance by equipping them with practical skills for their academic and professional journeys.
In addition to supporting individual students, the Foundation has also invested in improving learning environments in rural communities. In the Kavango West Region, the Foundation completed the construction of three classroom blocks and two water tanks at Ekondjo Primary School, Sitenda Junior Primary School, and Hamweyi Primary School, as well as water installations at Kasivi and Ncaute Primary Schools. The initiative, valued at approximately N$5.9 million, significantly improved infrastructure and learning conditions for schools in the region.
Earlier initiatives also included the donation of IT equipment and computers to schools in the Kavango regions, providing teachers and learners with access to digital learning tools that were previously unavailable. The Foundation has further promoted academic excellence through its support of the Namibian Women in Engineering Academic Excellence Awards, recognising outstanding female engineering students and encouraging greater participation of women in technical professions.
Strengthening Healthcare Support
Healthcare support remains another important area of intervention for the Foundation. In recent years, the Foundation has supported several health initiatives aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and medical services in Namibia. This includes contributions toward the renovation of ablution facilities at Katutura State Hospital, improving essential infrastructure for patients and healthcare workers.
More recently, the Foundation donated specialised surgical equipment to Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospital, enhancing the hospital’s medical capacity and supporting the establishment of its endoscopic unit. The equipment will play an important role in strengthening surgical procedures and improving patient outcomes in northern Namibia.
The Foundation has also partnered with healthcare organisations to support specialised medical interventions, including cleft palate reconstruction surgeries for children, helping to restore confidence and improve the quality of life for young patients and their families. Further health interventions remain under consideration in various regions, reflecting the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting Namibia’s public healthcare system.
Supporting Communities and Youth Development
Beyond education and health, the NAMDIA Foundation continues to support initiatives that strengthen communities and create opportunities for young people. In the Karas Region, the Foundation funded the construction of a secure hostel fence at Lordsville Secondary School, addressing long-standing safety concerns for learners and staff living at the school hostel.
The Foundation has also supported rural development initiatives such as the Bernafay Resettlement Farm Integrated Food Systems Project, which promotes sustainable agricultural production, improves food security, and creates opportunities for rural communities.
Under its sports development initiatives, the Foundation inaugurated the Outjo Cricket Development Centre, providing young athletes in the region with a dedicated facility to develop their cricket skills. The centre represents the second cricket development facility donated by the NAMDIA Foundation, following the establishment of a similar training facility in Walvis Bay. Together, these investments strengthen Cricket Namibia’s grassroots development programme by providing young players with structured training environments and creating pathways for future national talent.
A Promise Fulfilled
The NAMDIA Foundation was established with a clear purpose: to ensure that Namibia’s diamonds contribute directly to the development of its people. Through strategic investments in education, healthcare, youth development, and community infrastructure, the Foundation continues to convert the value of Namibia’s diamonds into lasting opportunities for communities across the country.
Each classroom built, each student supported, and each community project delivered reflects a simple but powerful belief that Namibia’s natural wealth should ultimately uplift the nation and improve the lives of its people. Because when Namibia’s diamonds shine on the world stage, their greatest brilliance lies in the impact they create at home.
