Brave Gladiators receive N$300 000 reward from MTC
Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) yesterday rewarded the country’s senior women’s national team, the Brave Gladiators, with N$300 000 in prize money following their victory at this year’s Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Women’s Championship.
The money will be shared among the players and the technical team after the team’s historic triumph in South Africa last Sunday.
In addition to the cash reward, the team also received various goodies from the telecommunications company.
Speaking at the reward ceremony, MTC spokesperson Tim Ekandjo praised the team for their achievement.
“We want to congratulate the women’s national football team for winning the Cosafa tournament,” he said.
“As a token of our gratitude, MTC Namibia has decided to reward the team with N$300 000.
“Each player and member of the technical team will receive N$10 000 from the total amount.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank First National Bank (FNB) Namibia for sponsoring women’s football,” added Ekandjo.
The Brave Gladiators defeated hosts South Africa 2-1 in the final, securing their first Cosafa Women’s Championship title after several attempts. It was also their first appearance in the final since 2006.
Thank you, FNB
Brave Gladiators captain Lovisa Mulunga thanked MTC on behalf of the team after receiving a commemorative ball presented by the company.
“It is an honour to receive this from MTC, and we would like to thank everyone who played a role in our success,” she said.
“I would also like to thank FNB Namibia for the role they have played in supporting women’s football.”
Sports deputy minister Dino Ballotti said the victory should serve as motivation for the growth of professional women’s football in Namibia.
“I would once again like to congratulate the team for winning the tournament,” he said.
“This is the time for Namibian football to consider turning professional to ensure that our players can also compete in top leagues.”
