Omusati guns for Nedbank Newspaper Cup trophy
Two-time champions Omusati Region are preparing to make a strong statement at this year’s Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup as they set their sights on reclaiming the coveted national youth football title.
Omusati previously won the prestigious tournament in 2014 and again in 2024, when the competition was hosted in Gobabis.
The 2026 edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place in Keetmanshoop, //Karas Region, from 3 to 5 April, where the country’s top regional youth teams will battle for top honours.
As part of their preparations, Omusati began their player selection process with trials held last month before narrowing the squad down to a final team.
Head coach Shipena Nakalondo said he has full confidence in the players selected, praising their commitment and readiness ahead of the competition.
Despite being drawn in what many consider a tough group alongside defending champions Kunene Region, Nakalondo remains optimistic about Omusati’s chances.
“We respect every team in the competition, including the defending champions, but we are focused on our own game. The boys are ready, and we are going there to compete and give our best,” he said.
Nakalondo also stressed the importance of tournaments such as the Newspaper Cup in nurturing young talent and thanked the sponsors for their continued investment in youth football.
“We are grateful to Nedbank Namibia for providing this kind of platform for young players to showcase their talent. Opportunities like these are important for the growth of football in the country,” he added.
With a proud history in the tournament and a determined squad at their disposal, Omusati will be hoping to build on past success and once again prove why they remain one of Namibia’s strongest youth football regions.
