Namdeb Diamond Corporation donated 120 mattresses and 56 beds to the governor’s office in Keetmanshoop on 22 August.

This comes after a visit earlier this year to different schools in the //Karas region, which exposed the shocking living conditions of some of the hostels.

After this discovery, the Namdeb team decided to donate beds and mattresses, and, with the help of the governor’s office, they identified hostels in need of proper beds.

"Growing up with both my parents being teachers, I get to witness first-hand that it makes the teaching and learning experience better for the learners if they have a warm and comfortable bed to sleep on," Namdeb CEO Riaan Burger said at the handover.

Namdeb is committed to the socio-economic development of the communities that are impacted by the company’s operations. They said education is a key focus area for the company.

Development

The following community hostels in the //Karas region will benefit from the donation: Blouwes, Snyfontein, Ganachas and Grünau.

Riaan Burger urged the school’s staff to make sure that the beds and mattresses will be taken care of.

Aletha Fredericks, //Karas governor, said that the government has a long attached great importance to the development of education as a driving force for its sustainable economic development strategy.

"With this, I call upon all stakeholders in education to play their part. Moreover, we need the private sector and other partners to come onboard to support the government in this regard," Fredericks said.
