2023 Census: Namibia in numbers

Preliminary results
The preliminary results of the Housing and Population Census released by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) show the country had a population of 3 022 401 on Census Reference Night, 24 September 2023.

This translates to an intercensal annual growth rate from 2011 to 3.0%, says Cirrus Capital.

The urban population grew by 65.5% from 2011 to 2023, while the rural area population increased by 26.3%. The urban population made up 49.5% of the total, while the rural population made up 50.5%.

Real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita has been adjusted downwards significantly as the official intercensal growth rate came out notably greater than the projected annual population growth rate of 1.9%.

Average household size has declined from 4.4 persons in 2011 to 3.8 in 2023 despite a rapidly growing number of total households, which declines in average households size in all regions.

Namibia has made a male-to-female ratio of 95.2 males for every 100 females.

The economically active group, age 15 to 59, makes up 57.4% of the population, compared to 56.5% in 2011.
